The World Is Your Oyster SS17 Lookbook
by Adriano Batista

The World Is Your Oyster unveiled its Spring/Summer 2017 lookbook, featuring model John Patrick Shadow shot by Issac Lam and styled by Calvin Chan & Joyce Kun.
The collection titled “We Are Here In Others’ Mold” draws inspiration from a popular topic in Hong Kong local scene.
From the latest Global Living Report, Hong Kong has been recorded as the world’s highest value residential city, with 1 square feet costing US$1416. For a normal fresh graduate, this may take 880 hours to earn just enough for this small square. And this may already take up 1/176 of one’s life.
However, the culture of the society has mold a path that one has no part in designing, get a job and earn a living. The importance of making a living is always threatening to squeeze out one’s uniqueness. People get stuck between what he wanted to be and what he was forced to be.
Throughout the whole collection, contrasting elements have been put together such as formal pinstripe poplin with plain white shirt. Design has been combined by two styles; such as unbalanced cutting at shoulder, asymmetrical length and different lapel sizes. Some business attire elements like, traditional argyle pattern on knit sweater has been modified into raw edge patches. The exposed raw seams and raw edges detail give a sense of rebellious spirit into the “proper” work suit. Embroidery slogan like “BE GENTLE WITH ME” & “KISS GOODBYE TO THOSE OLD DAYS” are to express the sense of desperation of being powerless to change one’s life, yet seeing the time passes before your eyes day by day. And because this is the only life we will ever have, there shall be more meaning in life.
