“Better late than never!”. The news caught us out, we cannot but be excited.
Yes, it seems that the American men’s designers have finally decided to rebel against the hegemonic power of the feminine fashion week and actually join forces to shine on their own. This is what has been happening for years in London, Milan and Paris, where brands such as Calvin Klein COLLECTION, John Varvatos, Thom Browne and Philipp Lim have found a way and a place where to present their collections anticipating the usual kermesse in New York.
Well, if it’s true that God invented fashion and made it female, that Adam born from her persuasive rib has grown and become independent, even in the Big Apple.
According to the New York Times, which speaks about it in exclusive, men’s designers received emails from Representatives of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in October gauging interest. The idea had long been questioned but the sponsors’ ok seems to have greatly accelerated the decision. Nothing official yet, of course, although the rumors are more and more insistent.
The reasons are partly of a logistical nature. The menswear selling season occurs in the summertime, at the end of the shows in Europe. This gap needed to be filled some way.
The immediate go by next summer, then, on a date that will hypothetically follow the Haute Couture in Paris.
Anyway, difficulties, which should not be underestimated, persist. To create a calendar with the right appeal and able to attract the buyers’ and international press’ attention, call back home the emigrated designers, offer the right mix of innovation, freshness and marketing will not be easy but the unsinkable American soul will have the upper hand again… we’re sure.
