Derived from the constant tension between Western imposition and traditional African idols explored in Chinua Achebe’s writings, “Underground Spiritual”  by Head of State keys on the clash between traditional and non-traditional culture that reached a crescendo during the 1960s and 70s.

“Underground Spiritual” represents a complicated, multi-faceted, fully-formed representation of West Africa through clothing that combines the traditional; African wear/silhouette with the non-traditional; refined sportswear with subtle utilitarian pieces.
