Walter Van Beirendonck and Eastpak are teaming up again. The new collaboration, called the Walter Pak’r, arrives this month in three colors: Orange, Blue and Military Green.

The design revisits the Monster Backpack, first released in 2004. That original bag featured expressive eyes, ears and a mouth, all rendered in the bold colors that define Van Beirendonck’s work. It came back in 2014 as part of the Eastpak Artist Studio project, a collaboration with Designers Against AIDS that turned backpacks into art pieces. That version used premium leather and added details that made it a collector’s item.

Now the monster returns. The Walter Pak’r keeps the pointed ears, the triangular nose and the toothy grin. A monochromatic metal zipper adds a clean finish. Each bag carries the Walterman label, a signature that marks the collaboration.

The bags were first shown during Paris Fashion Week in January. They represent a partnership that has run for more than two decades. Van Beirendonck, a member of the Antwerp Six and former head of fashion at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, brings his radical creativity. Eastpak brings the function. Isis Buyse, Global Product Director at Eastpak, describes it as a dialogue that keeps evolving with culture and the way people express themselves.

The Walter Van Beirendonck x Eastpak Walter Pak’r collection is available through select retailers, the Eastpak flagship store in London and online at Eastpak.com.
