Calling all LABUBU lovers! LABUBU is in the air with the opening of THE MONSTERS 10th Anniversary Exhibition in Paris. If you don’t know the worldwide cultural phenomenon that cute, curious and cult and perhaps living under a rock, let me bring you up to date. No one quite knows when LABUBU first came into existence, perhaps even before the Jurassic era, but THE MONSTERS is a fantastical universe dreamed up by Hong Kong picture book author and artist Kasing Lung. Set deep within Nordic forests, the story follows a tribe of tiny elves whose everyday escapades blur innocence and mischief. At the center are the LABUBU, the wide-eyed, nine-toothed, and crowned with sharp upright ears, they are the most restless spirits of the woods. Curious about everything and afraid of almost nothing, LABUBU are playful tricksters with a fundamentally optimistic, kind-hearted core.

Lung first began building this mythic world in 2015, drawing inspiration from Nordic mythology in his picture books The Mysterious Buka, Pato and the Girl, and Miro Requiem, which laid the foundations for THE MONSTERS’ lore. Long before that, in 2003, he became the first Chinese artist to win a major European picture book competition with Oki, marking him as a singular storytelling voice. Since 2011, his collaboration with Hong Kong designer toy brand How2work has transformed his illustrated characters into cult collectible figures.

Co-curated by POP MART and How2work, the exhibition unveils previously unseen manuscripts alongside a complete presentation of the collectible figures. Together, they map the creative DNA of the universe Lung has built over the past decade. Set across six immersive environments, the exhibition invites visitors deeper into the mythology of THE MONSTERS. By the end of the exhibition many of your questions about THE MONSTERS will be answered, and many more will arrive. Like how many monsters are there, and why I am I drawn to one particular monster.
