The Sustainable Challenge returns for its eighth edition, an annual initiative organised by FAD (Fostering Arts and Design) in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council, the Dutch Embassy in Spain, and the Government of Catalonia. This year’s theme, Age Pride!, takes aim at the absence and misrepresentation of older people in fashion media, inviting thirty design students from across Europe to create editorials or fashion films that challenge ageism through styling and art direction.

The challenge takes the form of a creative marathon running from 11 to 14 November at the Disseny Hub Barcelona. It is not a competition. There are no winners or losers, only proposals developed through a critical lens that align with the project’s values. Expert tutors guide students throughout the process, helping them shape their ideas as they work alongside professional models and industry experts to challenge conventional beauty standards and explore more inclusive visual narratives.

Sustainable Challenge 2025 Edition

Fashion is never neutral, and age remains one of the most overlooked dimensions in cultural analysis. Researchers such as Julia Twigg have introduced concepts like “age ordering,” revealing how fashion systematically ranks clothing by age, with certain styles acting as unspoken uniforms for older adults. Studies show that older people remain largely absent or stereotyped in fashion media, which negatively impacts their relationship with fashion and reinforces unrealistic beauty ideals. Age Pride! takes that as its starting point, treating dress as a political tool to reclaim visibility and cultural value in societies where worth is too often measured by productivity.
