Stone Island has opened a new flagship store in Naples. To mark it, the brand released a short documentary called “A SORPRES,” directed by Glenn Kitson, tracing its long connection to the city.
The film moves through the Resina market, a place where Stone Island pieces first appeared in Naples decades ago. They sat among hundreds of other garments on sale, waiting to be found. The title comes from Neapolitan dialect and means “by surprise.” It refers to that moment of discovery when someone spotted a Stone Island badge among the piles. A rare occurrence. Something worth waiting for.
“The film tells the story of the relationship between Naples and the brand, reflecting the Stone Island community as a whole,” Kitson said. The soundtrack comes from Liberato, the Neapolitan artist who has built a career without ever revealing his identity.
Roberto Saviano appears in the film and talks about what locals call the Resina Miracle. The market grew after the war from surplus goods originally meant for American troops. That military and workwear stock lined up with what Stone Island was doing in the early ’80s and ’90s. Collectible pieces started showing up in the pezze, the piles. The market became a destination for anyone looking for durable, military-inspired clothing.
Gennaro Boccia of Pezze Vintage puts it in context. When someone found that particular jacket at Resina, people would say: “Ecco il cuore d’oro!” Here is the golden heart.
The new flagship sits in Naples now, but the film makes clear the relationship was there long before the store opened. Check out the film below:
