Stone Island Explores Hardcore’s Duality with “The Calm and the Chaos”
by Adriano Batista
Stone Island has launched The Calm and the Chaos, a new creative project that examines the hardcore and metalcore scenes through the communities that have kept them alive across generations. Rather than documenting a musical genre, the project looks at the values of authenticity and collective identity that have allowed the hardcore scene to remain uncompromised, a spirit that echoes Stone Island’s own culture of research.

Photographer and director Isaac Lamb spent over six months travelling across Europe and North America, embedding himself within the community to document hardcore through bands including High Vis, Knocked Loose, and Haywire 617. The work captures the intensity of live performance alongside the quieter moments between tours and everyday life, the duality that gives the project its name. The relationship between music and style has always been integral to Stone Island’s universe, and the project traces the dialogue between American and British hardcore through the friendship between Justice Tripp of Trapped Under Ice and Angel Du$t, and Graham Sayle of High Vis, relationships that have shaped successive generations and continue through artists including Isaac Hale of Knocked Loose and Austin Sparkman of Haywire 617.

Rather than styling its subjects, the project reflects how Stone Island has become part of the lived visual language of this community over decades. The musicians wear a mix of their own current and vintage pieces alongside archival garments provided by collector Archie Maher, including a 1987 Tela Stella reversible jacket worn by Graham Sayle, a 1984 treated denim chore jacket worn by Justice Tripp, and a 1991 Ice Camouflage bomber jacket worn by Tommy of Haywire. The project builds on Stone Island’s previous collaboration with the hardcore community, which featured Isaac Hale in the Fall/Winter 2025-2026 Community as a Form of Research project.
The project culminates in a tour book, shot on 35mm film and released in September 2027, capturing performers and audiences with the same intimacy, preserving moments of intensity and camaraderie beyond the stage.
