Saint Laurent Rive Droite Beijing presents Unusual, a selection of works by Chinese artist Huang Rui, curated by Anthony Vaccarello.
Huang Rui was born in Beijing in 1952 and works between Paris and his home city. He was a founding member of The Stars (Xing Xing) art group and is recognised as a pioneering figure of Chinese contemporary art. He is also credited as the founder of Beijing’s 798 Art Zone, the sprawling artistic neighbourhood that has defined much of the city’s contemporary art landscape over the past two decades.
His practice spans oil painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, with a focus on abstraction, spatial perception, and the relationship between time, structure, and material. His work carries a sustained commitment to Chinese philosophical heritage alongside an ongoing dialogue with international art movements.
Huang Rui’s work has been shown widely, including group exhibitions at Centre Pompidou in 2024, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2017, and the Venice Biennale in 2013. His pieces are held in major institutional collections worldwide. He is represented by SPURS Gallery in China.
All exhibited works, including paintings and sculptures, will be available for sale at Saint Laurent Rive Droite Beijing. The exhibition opened on 11 June and runs through 31 July.
