Perfume Genius is back with Natural High, his first new song since Glory and the first taste of The Lesson, a new music and dance project with choreographer Kate Wallich.
The pair previously worked together on The Sun Still Burns Here in 2019, a collaboration that later led to Ugly Season. This time, they take inspiration from Elfriede Jelinek’s novel The Piano Teacher and Michael Haneke’s film adaptation, exploring desire, control and the tension between what we allow ourselves to feel and what we repress.
Co-produced with Fashion Club’s Pascal Stevenson, Natural High stretches across nearly six minutes. It begins slowly, with sparse piano, dreamy synths and Mike Hadreas’ haunting vocals, before picking up the pace and gradually heading towards the dancefloor.
The new video brings that same tension between control and release into movement, making Natural High a perfect introduction to the world of The Lesson.
