Mykonos is often defined by the spectacle of peak summer, but a real charm can be found in the last days of summer and the last days of spring, which are among my favourite times to visit the island. There is a noticeably gentler pace without losing the energy that has made Mykonos one of the Mediterranean’s most enduring destinations. The island takes on a different rhythm as the intensity of high summer begins to fade. The Aegean remains warm, the beaches are more relaxed, the evenings are just cool enough to make long dinners beneath the stars feel even more inviting, and nightlife continues to bring people together. For me, it is one of those rare destinations that works equally well for a spontaneous long weekend or a longer escape, particularly at the beginning and end of the season.

One place that captures this slower, more considered side of the island is the distinctly design-forward NUMO Mykonos Boutique Resort. Tucked away on Mykonos’s wilder southeastern coast, the luxury resort overlooks the postcard beauty of Kalafatis Beach, just a leisurely stroll away, offering a peaceful escape to return to if coming back from the island’s more frenetic party hubs. Not too big, not too small, it sits effortlessly between considered design and the countryside, without feeling as though you are constantly rushing from one place to another, creating that dream escape.

Opening in 2024, the hotel is still in the word-of-mouth stage. The interiors, designed by Athens-based studio Hotel IM, blend 1960s and 1970s nostalgia with the clean lines of traditional Cycladic minimalism. Warm yellows, deep emerald greens and terracotta accents bring a Riviera-inspired glamour to smooth, whitewashed walls, brass fixtures and custom rattan lighting add a sense of playful sophistication. Bespoke details bring together Greek craftsmanship and distinctly Mykonian character.

The rooms are beautifully considered, with natural materials, soft colours and plenty of little details that make the stay feel comfortable rather than simply luxurious. I especially loved the in-room Olive Era bath products, which added a thoughtful, local-feeling touch to the bathrooms, alongside everything you need for an easy, relaxed stay. The Etherea Boutique Spa is another highlight, offering a peaceful space for treatments and a little time away from the pool and beach. It fits perfectly with NUMO’s approach to wellness: understated, restorative and never overly complicated.

The staff are warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming, with a relaxed approach that makes the whole experience feel personal without ever being intrusive. The gym is well equipped for keeping up with a workout, while one of the hotel’s loveliest touches is the outdoor cinema, where you can settle in and watch a film beneath the stars, a particularly magical way to spend an evening in Mykonos.

At the heart of the resort is the cinematic poolside, which instantly makes you feel at home and ready to chill, with Aegean views, cocktails and a drinks menu that puts a contemporary spin on Greek flavours, capturing the easy pleasure of eating and drinking well in Mykonos: unhurried, seasonal and best enjoyed with nowhere else to be, and maybe a good book. NUMO is the kind of place that works equally well for a proper summer holiday or one of those late-season escapes where you can make summer last just a bit longer.
