Nike is releasing a new version of its most established running shoe. The Pegasus 42 arrives April 9, and the brand says it delivers more energy return than any previous model.

The Pegasus line has been around since 1982. It is Nike’s longest-running and best-selling franchise in running. The 42nd edition keeps the familiar feel but adds updates meant to improve the ride.

The key change is in the Air unit. A full-length curved Air Zoom unit runs underfoot, designed to provide a springy sensation similar to Nike’s racing shoes but tuned for daily training. The brand claims 15 percent more energy return than the previous version. Other updates include a modified last for better fit and extra cushioning under the toes. An internal structure allows for 3 millimeters more foam there without raising the overall height. The midsole uses ReactX foam, carried over from the Pegasus 41. The outsole is a modernized waffle pattern for traction on different surfaces. The upper is lighter and more breathable.

The Pegasus 42 leads one of three categories in Nike’s streamlined road running lineup. Pegasus offers responsive cushioning for daily training. Vomero provides maximum cushioning for comfort. Structure delivers supportive cushioning for stability. The idea is to let runners choose based on what kind of run they are doing.

The shoe launches April 9 on nike.com and at select retailers. Color options range from bright to neutral.
