Hermès invited the Catalan architecture studio Mesura to create a site-specific installation for its store on Passeig de Gràcia. Titled Escalera Infinita (Infinite Staircase), the project draws from L’Appel du Large, the Maison’s annual theme for 2026, exploring a journey through an open architectural landscape of staircases and thresholds that invites viewers into the unknown.

The intervention centres on two irregular staircase structures that unfold across the windows like a journey with no beginning or end. Echoing the dreamlike architecture of M.C. Escher, the varying directions and shifts in scale alter the perception of space, evoking a world where conventional logic gives way to new ways of seeing. These landscapes are built on the iconography of the Maison’s silk scarves, suggesting distant lands where the imagination can roam. The staircase becomes a metaphor for the personal journey and for life itself, a path that cannot always be fully grasped yet invites us to keep moving. Getting lost, the installation suggests, is not necessarily a deviation but a way to discover new perspectives.

The project weaves together memories from architectural history, from the poetic dimension of Aldo Rossi to the proportion of Andrea Palladio, in dialogue with the formal language of Hermès. Its materiality, developed through collaboration with local trades, explores the expressive possibilities of plaster, a material historically linked to architectural ornamentation. The result is an architecture that oscillates between precision and dream, transforming the shop window into a threshold to other worlds. The installation is open to visitors until 28 November 2026.
