JW Anderson Summer Series
by Adriano Batista
JW Anderson unveiled a summer capsule collection featuring strong graphic forms, rooted in process and people.
The distinctive print appears on a men’s lapel-collared shirt and matching shorts. The graphic came from a visit to Dale Hope’s studio, a place known for preserving Hawaiian aloha shirts and their illustrated prints. JW Anderson picked a hand-painted floral print from his archive. The motif is called “Panini o ka Punahou” and it shows a cactus that flowers at night, typically during the summer months. The flower opens at dusk, spreads white petals around a yellow center, and wilts by dawn. It is a graphic representation of summer, both intense and fleeting.
Knitwear in the collection moves between openness and structure. There are nautical-striped knit dresses in compact bouclé jacquard with thin shoulder straps, along with breathable half-zip tops and striped cropped sweaters in bright colors. Graphics and characters from vintage ephemera are carefully screen-printed, with respect for their original form. The allure of gold-star sticker books, a nostalgic pastime, turns into clustered gold and silver stars that playfully censor images and sculpt shapes onto the ready-to-wear.
Footwear and accessories expand on the bright hues, woven details, and open, breathable silhouettes. Key styles include the Leaf Slide, a leather sandal with visible leaf veins, alongside woven sandals and pumps in contrast colors.
A new silhouette appears for the summer collection: the Bulb Bag. It has a soft, sculptural shape that flows naturally from the body. The bag comes in two versions. One is an elaborately beaded interpretation in colors that echo the ready-to-wear palette, finished with a smooth leather trim. The other is a crocheted version available in small and extra-large sizes, handcrafted from natural raffia and finished with a brown suede trim. The Loafer Bag features a woven construction inspired by basket weaving. Each piece is handwoven, a complex technique that shows the process at the heart of the collection.
The collection was photographed by Tanya and Zhenya Posternak and features actor Milo Callaghan. Check it out below:
