On 20 June 2026, Barcelona will host its first Juneteenth celebration in Sant Martí, Poblenou. Organised by a committee of local volunteers, the event brings together Black communities across the city and beyond for a day of history and collective presence.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, but its meaning has always extended past one nation. It marks freedom delayed and freedom claimed, alongside the ongoing work of memory and belonging. In Barcelona, that story carries particular weight as Black communities continue to build visibility and lasting cultural presence in the city. “Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation and Black joy,” said Derek Lumpkins, co-chair of the Juneteenth Barcelona Committee. “It is a time for us to celebrate our freedom, honour what that freedom means, and come together in community around the possibilities it creates.”

The programme spans daytime and evening, with over 300 attendees expected. The daytime programme is family-friendly and includes a community cookout, an international food fair, local vendors selling art, jewellery, and crafts, plus live entertainment throughout. Evening programming continues with performances, music, and late-night food and drinks. Featured collaborators include multidisciplinary artist Tina Masawi, DJ and ballroom pioneer Jay Jay Revlon, roller dance coach Ceci Heather, and Tudy’s Kitchen, making its Barcelona debut.

Beyond the celebration, the event signals a broader ambition for the city. The launch of The Grid: BCN will connect Black-owned businesses, creatives, and community leaders across Barcelona, helping moments like Juneteenth return and deepen over time. Early-bird tickets start at €12, with kids under 12 free during the daytime. Daytime entry begins at 13:00, with the night programme running from 21:30 to 02:00. Tickets are available HERE.
