Following the success of its presentation during Milan Design Week, Japanese fashion house Issey Miyake continues its creative momentum with a new opening in Manhattan. Situated at 45 Madison Avenue, overlooking Madison Square Park, the project reinforces the label’s ongoing dialogue between design, innovation, and material intelligence, a language it has refined for decades.

Housed within the historic New York Life Building, designed by architect Cass Gilbert, the 13,000 square foot interior unfolds across two levels and feels closer to an architectural installation than a conventional retail setting. Developed by SO IL, the intervention balances industrial clarity with a sense of quiet precision, allowing the original structure to remain present while introducing a distinctly contemporary rhythm.

Daylight becomes a defining material. It filters through oversized windows and moves across a sculptural staircase in transparent structural glass, which acts as the central axis of the space. Exposed Beaux Arts details are left intentionally visible, now contrasted with aluminium and stainless steel finishes that sharpen the overall composition. Elements from the brand’s former Tribeca location have also been reworked into display furniture, extending its approach to circular design.

At the rear, MADO meaning window in Japanese, introduces the first in-store gallery of its kind outside Japan. The space will host rotating exhibitions and collaborations, opening the brand further into the city’s cultural ecosystem.

The flagship gathers all Issey Miyake lines under one roof, offering a complete reading of the house today. To celebrate the launch, exclusive pieces such as the FOLDING COAT THE UNBOUND HAT, and the SHADE AND SHADED NY capsule will be available only in this location.

If you’re in New York or planning to be soon, it’s worth a detour. Not just for what is presented but for how it is experienced, a space where clothing, architecture, and atmosphere quietly overlap.
