Designer Fredrik Paulsen returned to his roots at Finland’s wildest skateboarding event. Paulsen teamed up with Finnish Design Shop to create the Vauhtikisat Chair One, a limited-edition piece that was skated and gifted at Vauhtikisat 2026 in Helsinki on 12 July.
Vauhtikisat started as a DIY gathering in 2014 and has since grown into one of the most compelling skate events in Europe, drawing over 4,000 skateboarders to the highest hill park in the city. Paulsen grew up in the Swedish skate scene, and it is where he learned to see the world differently, eventually leading him toward design. The chair is, in part, a way of giving something back.
“Skateboarding is the starting point for everything I do,” said Paulsen. “I started skating when I was six years old and it has shaped me and my creativity ever since. I feel really connected to Vauhtikisat, and the way it brings together the whole community in such a free and inclusive celebration of the art of skateboarding. Supporting it with JOY OBJECTS felt like the most natural thing in the world.”
Five chairs were made available through Finnish Design Shop, with one going to the winner of the competition. The collaboration also marks the arrival of JOY OBJECTS at Finnish Design Shop, where a wider selection of Paulsen’s work is now available. “We’ve never seen ourselves as just a shop,” said Anu Soiniitty, Brand Manager at Finnish Design Shop. “We’re here to champion the people and communities shaping design on their own terms. Vauhtikisat is raw and entirely its own, and putting Fredrik’s work right in the middle of it feels far more honest than setting it on a pedestal.”
A short film directed by Tuomas Nurmi and Juho Huttunen accompanies the collaboration, shot on film and following Paulsen, the event, and the community that shaped him.
