We took the frame of menswear, and what CELINE stands for, and then talked a lot about the energy of today, the here and now, the way people live and want to look. The way we want to feel in clothes. Character over costume.
Everything you could need. We feel that CELINE is a place to come and get dressed, for all sorts of days and nights and moments in life. Inviting everyone to find the best pieces and then to appropriate them into their lives, their rhythms, their style.
It’s about clothes that feel necessary, and personal, in beautiful fabrics that last.
An attitude, classics with bite, when discretion and restraint make the right kind of noise.” – Michael Rider

What do we need to build a wardrobe that will endure for years? We went to the Hôtel Colbert de Torcy to see Michael Rider’s first full menswear collection for CELINE. Rider is not only defining a new language for the house, but one for menswear that gives space and grace to personal identity. Walking inside, three things stood out: a pillar of knits, another of denim, and swirled on the floor a wide selection of soft leather shoes in gradient tones, setting the mood to remix and reinterpret pieces. Even the looks hanging on the wall in a gallery-like mood felt not only interchangeable with each other, but also with what you might have at home.

Rider is advocating the art of dressing with intent with cut and construction showing confident invention, from cashmere topcoats finished with tuxedo lapels to paper thin leather trench coats to leather jackets, instantly iconic silk scarves, the iconic Arc de Triomphe discreetly popped up throughout the collection. Sometimes designers say things like “the pieces speak for themselves” and in this case it could never be truer. It is everything; playful, cool, charming, discreet, clever, he doesn’t need to impress us more than the already emphasized longevity through luxurious fabrics and precise tailoring, there is no better soft power than space for your own personal narrative.
