Carhartt WIP is celebrating more than 15 years of its radio platform with a new project called Audio Archives. The initiative includes a printed publication, a capsule collection, and a series of global broadcasts and events.

Carhartt WIP Radio started in 2008, a moment when radio was moving from traditional FM into digital spaces. The format was simple: an artist or label plays their own music for an hour, with an interview alongside. Over the years, contributors have come from Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The show has kept going.

Audio Archives expands that idea. For the first time, the project brings together 17 independent radio stations from around the world under one collaborative effort. Some of these stations date back to 1969. Others launched after the pandemic. Each has its own identity, but together they represent a shift in how broadcasting works now.

The publication, also called Audio Archives, runs over 1,200 pages. It includes interviews with each of the 17 stations, where they talk about their journeys and the state of independent radio today. There is also a full archive of Carhartt WIP Radio features since 2008 and a selection of poster artworks. A 7-inch Flexi-disk comes with it, featuring soundbites from the participating stations along with Carhartt WIP Radio introductions and voiceovers.

The capsule collection is smaller. It includes two graphic long-sleeves, a hooded sweatshirt, and a record bag. A limited-edition Teenage Engineering OB-4 Magic Radio rounds out the offering.

Audio Archives launches February 26. An event at Berlin’s NBB Gallery follows on February 28. From March through April, the participating stations will host events and live broadcasts in their own cities around the world.
