Burberry and the V&A have announced The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon, a free exhibition at V&A South Kensington tracing the history of the Burberry trench coat, coinciding with the house’s 170th anniversary. The exhibition runs from 21 September 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the Prince Consort Gallery, a space rarely open to the public.

Drawing from the Burberry Archive and the V&A collection, the exhibition is divided into three sections. Invention explores Thomas Burberry’s creation of cotton gabardine in 1879 and its application to the trench coat, a garment that cemented its place in technical clothing through the combination of functionality and style. Craft examines the details that make the coat distinctive: the hand-finished collar, the House Check lining, the rain flap, and the detachable neck strap, all designed for protection from the elements. Creativity presents 19 looks from runway shows of the past 25 years, including designs by Chief Creative Officers Daniel Lee and Christopher Bailey, celebrating the ongoing reinterpretation of the trench.

Looking ahead to the future collaboration between the V&A and Burberry for the new Fashion Gallery, we are delighted to be working with the Burberry Archive to tell the story of the celebrated trench coat,” said Oriole Cullen, Senior Curator of Fashion and Textiles at the V&A. “A true symbol of British fashion that has stood the test of time and continues to evolve more than a century after its creation.

Carly Eck, Brand Curator at Burberry, added, “For the first time, the public will be able to discover numerous objects from the brand’s archives, from early 20th-century catalogues to a Burberry trench coat that belonged to the designer Hardy Amies.

The exhibition opens ahead of The Burberry Gallery, a major transformation of the fashion galleries at V&A South Kensington supported by Burberry as part of a multi-year partnership, scheduled for Fall 2028.
