BARRAGÁN SS27: “SS30” at the Mexican Embassy in Berlin

BARRAGÁN presented its Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled SS30, inside the Mexican Embassy in Berlin during Berlin Fashion Week. The choice of venue was deliberate: the embassy is a nation sustained by agreement and recognition, a temporary home on foreign ground where identity is validated through paperwork. The collection concerns Mexican identity, which has never been singular. It is plural, shaped by media, politics, and colonial history, yet repeatedly reduced to a single image defined from the outside.
The title SS30 references the political timeframe surrounding the projected end of Donald Trump’s current presidential administration in the United States. The garments translate this into form through embassy and hotel uniforms suggesting hospitality in foreign space, silhouettes that acknowledge transit, and pieces that reflect nationality as image. The collection examines how belonging is made recognizable beyond borders, validated through documentation.
The historical exchange between Mexico and Germany, shaped by migration and cultural production through the 1930s and 40s, reinforces identity as something formed through movement. Collaborations with Trashy Clothing, Self Indulgence, and Mats Rombaut extend this idea, drawing from the history of artistic exchange between Mexico and Europe. Each collaborator contributes their own perspective, creating a network of garments and objects that reach beyond a single geographic context. Exchange itself becomes a creative practice, echoing historical dialogues between Mexican artists while proposing new ones for the present.
