Ariana Grande has released “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” the lead single from her forthcoming eighth studio album, Petal.

Reuniting with Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, Ariana delivers a mid-tempo track that combines alt-pop and R&B over a sauntering instrumental with trap-influenced production. The vocal is more subdued than the soaring belts she’s known for, sitting low and haunting over the track’s moody atmosphere. Lyrically, the song reads as a reflective breakup anthem on the surface, with lines like “sorry if I made me your type” and “cause I barely tried.” Beneath that, it doubles as a commentary on Ariana Grande’s relationship with fame and public scrutiny. She has described it on Instagram as “one of my favorite songs I’ll ever write.”

The track marks her first release under her new imprint label, BabyDoll Music, operating through an exclusive license with Republic Records. The album is due on 31 July.
