Amouage has made its Sindbad perfume available to a global audience under a new name: Elsewhere. Originally created in 2025 for the Royal Opera House in Oman, the fragrance accompanied the institution’s first original opera, telling the story of the mythical Omani hero Sindbad. Released as an Oman exclusive, the composition quickly found an audience. Now, the same perfume reaches beyond that horizon.

At Amouage, transparency is extremely important to us,” said Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon. “We want all our devotees to be aware that Elsewhere and Sindbad are the same perfume. For rights reasons, we are not able to use the latter name outside Oman. But this has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because the story has now adopted a more universal dimension, as though Sindbad has taken his travelling to other lands.”

The perfume follows the narrative of the opera. Sindbad embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Hayat, battling a sorceress and discovering the Fragrance of Life, a substance with the power to cast away evil. To capture that thread of magic, Salmon turned to perfumer Pierre Negrin. “The idea of magic in perfumery is beautiful to explore,” said Negrin. “Perfume itself is a form of magic, a way of creating emotions through something invisible. But being asked to create a perfume that is actually supposed to be like a magical substance is a rare opportunity.”

The composition opens with honey, apricot, mango, and cardamom, a glow of comfort evoking the pull of home. The journey begins with black tea, davana, and a cappuccino accord, pulling the fragrance into deeper territory. The return is marked by tonka bean, vanilla, cedarwood, and the earthy presence of labdanum, cypriol, vetiver, and patchouli. “The narrative of the perfume reflects the opera,” Salmon said. “It’s about valuing the security of home, then being cast far away from one’s safe space, going elsewhere, and finally returning and learning the true worth of all our havens.”

Elsewhere belongs to Amouage’s Essences collection. The perfume concentrate is infused for six months with sandalwood chips from Australia, while the alcohol is infused for six months in handmade oakwood barrels produced by the French firm Allary. The double infusion gives the fragrance a distinct patina. The bottle carries the Essences flacon with its desert-inspired ridges, and beneath it sits a handmade medal bearing a compass to represent journeys. The label is rendered in blue to reflect the oceans, while the outer sleeve features abstract forms by artist Louise Mertens conveying movement and an anchor motif for the solidity of home. Elsewhere is available now.
