The Kunstmuseum Den Haag has opened a major retrospective celebrating the 40-year career of Dutch photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Titled “Can Love Be A Photograph,” the exhibition runs from March 21 to September 6, 2026.

The show spans four decades of work across art, fashion and portraiture. It is organized thematically rather than chronologically, allowing images to form new relationships with one another across 18 rooms. The approach challenges the idea of photography as a simple mirror of reality, exploring themes of gender, identity and the enduring presence of beauty.

Me Kissing Vinoodh (Eternally), 2010

Inez & Vinoodh have worked together since 1986. They emerged as pioneers in digital image creation, occupying a space between the art and fashion worlds. Their work often balances the familiar with the unsettling, the everyday with the mysterious.

At the center of the exhibition, under the theme “The Psychomorphic Phenomenon,” three early series are displayed together for the first time. These works from the early 1990s used digital manipulation to portray human beings shaped by emotion. “Thank You Thigh Master” (1992) examines the pursuit of physical perfection. “Final Fantasy” (1993) looks at childhood and innocence. “The Forest” (1995) addresses male power roles and the breakdown of intimacy.

“The Kiss” serves as the exhibition’s emblem, a recurring motif in the artists’ work since 1999. It explores the point where two individuals become indistinguishable from one another. For the first time, three iconic works from the “Me Kissing…” series are shown alongside their recent series “Think Love,” which extends the theme into the next generation.

Think Love, 2025

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue designed by M/M (Paris) and published by Hannibal Books. It features essays by Donatien Grau, Francesco Bonami, Pamela Chen and Willemijn van der Zwaan, along with an interview conducted by Tilda Swinton. The museum shop will be curated by Inez & Vinoodh throughout the exhibition.
